Dec 7-11,2009 Drama Classes

This week, we had an unusual schedule due to our history test.

Anyways, this week me and my group (denise, valerie, joyce) made a scenario for our troup skit for Commedia. We have to perform it next week. :S
It was a really cool combination because the characters who are being played are Pantalone (me), Brighella (Denise), Columbine (Valerie) and Arlecchino (Joyce). Since Combine and Arlecchino likes each other it can make a really cool effect on the skit (the skit can include love), that also might make Pantalone really angry, because he is the sort of guy that gets grumpy really easily (well actually he is grumpy...naturally). Plus, Brighella is just kind of annoying and too happy for the other characters in the skit.
I think the scenario is kind of good and kind of funny. The major issue now, is that when we acted it out it was too short, it's supposed to be 5-8 minutes, which we only performed around 1 minute. We are trying to make it longer by getting more into the character.
I'm pretty nervous and excited at the same time about the performance.
Something easy was acting the skit and practicing with the group. :D

Good luck to everyone!

Dec. 4, 2009

This week in Drama, we were researching about our Commedia Characters.
My character is the famous, Pantalone.

I thought of my scenario, and thought it was pretty funny and that situation might happen to Pantalone. We had to use that scenario and perform in front of the whole class on Friday, I was really really nervous, since it was a solo monologue.
I practiced the whole week, and something I found hard was... learning how to do Pantalone's voice and his movements. It was wasn't as hard to do his movements, but it was hard to sustain them, and keep the movements like that for the whole 1-2 minutes.
Something easy was thinking of the scenario. It was fun imagining what Pantalone would do, and what the audience would think of the situation.

When I performed it, I was nervous at the last minute. Luckily I practiced it many times, so it didn't turn out that bad.
At the middle of doing it I relaxed more, because it felt like I knew what I was doing and what my character is trying to do too. It was much easier than what I thought it would be like. So that was good.... :)

Next week we are going to work on our "troupe project"
My group is....Brighella, Columbine, Puchinella, and me (Pantalone)
I think this group is really interesting, and I hope we will think up something really funny. :D

Nov. 27.2009

Last week, we had to pick our top 3 characters in Commedia, and we have to act and know about this character for the next few weeks.
My top 3 picks were Il Dottore, Pantalone and Targalia.
I ended up with Pantalone.

We watched a little movie about the Commedia characters.
I'm scared of doing this project, because we have to perform ourselves (in front of the class) with the character that we have. I'm not really comfortable of being Pantalone, because it is kind of hard to act like him, especially his voice.

My partner is Michelle, but I can't act with her on stage, so it is even more embarrassing.
But I hope doing this project can make me brave, even though i'm super nervous.

Nov. 17, 2009

Last post, I didn't talk about the filming, editing and the converting...so I made another post just to talk about that. :)

Last week, me and Christie filmed in the green screen room. It was SUPER cool and SUPER fun! We got these mics and the person listening to the earphones can hear us really clearly.
Christie missed one line (I'm sorry i'm talking about you), but overall it was good! We finished filming in one take, since we memorized most of our lines. It was fun to look at ourselves while filming in the little tv screens...
It was really easy when me and Christie was filming together. But I didn't like filming the solo parts (which was only 1). It was also kind of uncomfortable because Adam and Victor were filming us.
For the editing part, we had to do it in like 20 minutes or something, but of course we couldn't edit and convert in 20 minute, so we had to stay for Mr. Smeed's remedial.
After the remedial we finished editing, with sound effects and converting. Overall, it was really successful, because everything worked out, even though we only had one class, 80 minutes, to film, edit and convert, which was pretty much impossible..(not really).
I'm just very nervous if we have to show our movie to the class, because it's really embarrassing.

Drama Oct. 13 (Drama Class)

In Drama class on Oct. 13, our class went to the LLAC backstage to work with a workshop called Zen Zen Zo. There was a women there to teach us.
That day, Mr. David was our sub, and he was really funny and dramatic during the workshop.
It was really fun, but there was also hard parts.
It was hard when we had to be really silly and dance nerd-ily to Spice Girls. (even though it was pretty funny) It was also kind of hard and embarrassing when we had to do the level 6 in the energy levels activity. I'm not usually like that and it is very rare that that would happen. All I did was look crazy and jump around, even though I knew I could do better than that. (Maybe it was because it was in the morning) There was also a part which was easy, it was when we had to imitate the first person (in our group) that walks out and walk normally. I was the last person, and we had to make that first person's habits and make it really really really dramatic. That was fun so I thought that was easy.
The other things we did that week was to write scripts for the interviewing project. Me and Christie are in a group, and we chose to do a Late Night Talk show. We are going to use the green screen, and i'm kind of nervous because someone else is going to help us film. But I think it is going to fun. We also took more notes on Commedia dell Arte, which helped us write our scripts.

Nov. 8, 2009

This week in drama, we had to pick groups and then read and practice our Commedia Dell'Arte scripts and also present a presentation about it.
My partner is Christie and we were talking about the Lovers. It was actually kind of hard to read the scripts, because we had to read them with feeling. I mean the reading part was easy, but we had to read with actions and emotions. So when we were reading we had to do actions (tried to), and we ended up doing some silly actions. I'm not really sure if i'm ready to present on Monday (tomorrow), i'm pretty nervous, because I don't know if I should really do the actions that we thought of..
We did the presentation in Google Docs so me and Christie could share it and do it together. We are done with the presentation, so I guess i'm not really that stressed about the presentation part.
On Friday's drama class, we did an activity where we will have to "argue" and then someone will become the higher status and then that person would stand on the chair and then the other person would want to over power him. But also remembering that if someone has a higher status (than you), then you would listen to that person, but you would have to use a smart and polite way to overpower that other person.
It was kind of hard, because I couldn't think of a topic to argue about, plus i'm not a good argue-er....so the conversation was really awkward..

+ the masks came!!! They look pretty :)

Oct. 23, 2009

This week Mr. Smeed talked about Commedia Dell'arte.
My first impression of Commedia Dell'arte was comedy, when Mr. Smeed showed us the videos, the first thing I thought was it being funny. From all the characters I know from Commedia Dell'arte, I actually like Pantalone, because he is a really interesting character. He is a bitter and old man, he is a lonley man, which I like because it is kind of cool to "be" this character, and of course I mean acting. One question I want to ask about Commedia Dell'arte is, what do you do if an actor changed the story line accidently and the whole story changed? I hope to find the answer before the end of the unit. If one actor messed up on the story line, and imporvised too far, maybe it will affect the play.

On Monday, we did this Drama Reflection, we also had to evaluate ourselves and our group mates. I thought that it was pretty easy. I think that group work is really important, even though my group's team work was the best, but it was pretty good, and i'm proud of that. :)
On Wednseday, we watched a slideshow that introduced Commedia Dell'Arte. I heard that we had to find a character from Commedia Dell'Arte and we have to be them for the rest of the unit. I am pretty excited about that, even though I am very nervous about which character I am going to be. We have to know our character really well so that we can be "pros" in our character, which is pretty hard, because you need to do loads of research about that character. I heard that an actor had to lock herself somewhere just to get used to that character, she had to research a lot about that character, I think she stayed locked for a few months. That must be tiring!!!
Even though i'm excited to be a character, i'm still scared, mostly because we have to improvise while acting...which I don't think i'm good at. :( But still....it's going to be fun!

0ct. 15, 2009

Today our class went to the LLAC to watch out silent movies.
Our video was O.K, because some parts were good and some parts have to be improved.
One of the things we have to work on is not to shake the camera or move the camera when filming. I noticed that the other groups didn't really have this issue, because all their shots were really still.
Another things we need to work on is the last part of the movie. because our music stopped for some reasons. We also didn't really have a lot time of edit the movie, because we were kind of slow. That leads to another things we have to work on...we have to be more efficient!
When I was watching other groups' silent movies, I saw many exaggerated movements and funny actions, which is good, because it makes the movie more interesting and it is easier to understand what the character is talking about.

Drama Oct. 9, 2009 (Friday)

Today I learned that editing a movie is really hard.
Especially because we are not professional (obviously), and because we don't really have much experience.
A part of my group searched for music and another part of my group edited.
When editing, we found some parts where we didn't need, it was a blooper.
When we were talking about deleting it, Mr. Smeed told us not to, because we might need a part of it. That is another thing we learned today.
We also found out the clips we took were really wobbly. We forgot that moving the camera with the person creates a bad effect, so all the clips turned out weird. That was something we should have done better.
Our movie is not really done yet. Even though we found some songs to add into the movie, we are still in the process of editing the clips.
So far, me and my group's co-operation is O.K. Even though it could be better.
Hope we will finish the movie next class so that we can make it in time for the premiere!

My Top 3 Journal Entries :)

Sep. 7, 2009

Today was a special day, considering it’s only been the 6th class. We went to the LLAC theatre with Mr. Ma to learn about the stage, lights, rules and other things.
The first thing we did was going to the booth, the top area that can overlook the stage, and has a lot of controls, including lighting, microphone controls, and other things. It was kind of a privilege to go up there, because it’s “Staff Only”, and we don’t get to see it everyday.
He also took us to the stage, and we wrote down the stage left, right, up, down, and also the house left and right, which is the audience’s perspective when they look at the stage.
Mr. Ma (Stanley), also showed us some cool lights, where he can mix colors, or make shapes out of the lights, that was pretty cool…we were fascinated by it. ☺
We learnt about the roles in a theatre, the producer, managers…until actors and assistants. I learned that the producer is the most important, then he employs directors, who then employ designers or managers. The day of the show, only the theatre manager and the stage manager will be there, the others will be gone. The theatre manager is in charge of the outside (the look) of the theatre, like ushers, the ticketing…etc. The stage manager will be looking at the stage and making sure everything is in the right places, and the assistant stage manager (if he/she has one) will be helping too.
After that lesson, we went to the stage and did some games, which was awesome. :D
Mr. Smeed told use that we will have a test soon, about the theatre structure and the important facts that we learnt today.

Sep. 23,2009

Today in Drama Class, me and my group stayed in the drama pit to practice our acting.
I had to work with my facial expressions, because I was laughing when Lucas “kidnapped” me, which obviously is wrong, I had to be scared.
That was what I had to work on.
The plot that we thought of was really fun, we also learned how to take the shots.

Sep. 25,2009

Today, we had to film the actual thing! The place we filmed was in the whole 6 floor, including the cafeteria, playground and the bridge. Mr. Smeed told us to take the shoots in different angles. And that we just take how much as we want, then we can edit it out. Our acting was really fun, even though I would like it if there were sounds, because then we can show our expressions easier. But anyways, we got many shoots, and tried to make things more perfect.
The hard part was to make the expressions and movements obvious, it was also really hard not to laugh. ☺

I hope you like them :D

Today, we created an iGoogle account, then we created a a blog with blogger. We couldn't film today because there is rain outside, and me and my group has to go out to film. There is also another reason....but I rather not mention it. :I But on the good side, I picked out a cute layout for my iGoogle account! :D
